In Appreciation and Gratitude

Grover Cleveland Hatcher Jr., of Summerland Key, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2017 at the age of 90. Born June 7, 1926, in Corbin, Whitney County, Kentucky to Grover and Ida Hatcher, he lived most of his life in Torrance, California, and Bellingham, Washington. Grover married his lovely wife and best friend Rachel Hamester in June, 1949. They were married 63 years before Rachel passed away in 2012. He was a mechanical engineer with a B.S. degree from University of Miami. Before retiring, he was manager of maintenance services for Mobil Oil in Virginia.

Grover loved the outdoors, especially boating, wreck fishing, trolling for mahi mahi (hours on end), advising kiteboarding students, playing dominoes with his neighbors, and golfing. He loved and was proud of his three children and four grandchildren.

Grover served as a seaman in the U.S. Navy, enlisting in 1944 and honorably discharged on July 4, 1946.

With appreciation and respect for the service of our brave American veterans, Grover contributed significantly to the Thank You for Your Service endowment at Whatcom, started by local attorney Steve Shropshire. This endowment funds scholarships and support for veterans here. In fact, one of his last acts in this world was to donate $10,000 (again) to the scholarship, which supports Whatcom veterans. We are thankful to Grover Hatcher for his wonderful commitment to those who serve our country.
